The challenge

Folding chairs are usually a compromise: light but flimsy, or sturdy but awkward to carry.

The approach

Reduce the whole structure to one crossing gesture, so the fold itself becomes the design.

Design process & development.

Phase 01

Research

Studied hinge mechanics, load paths and how people carry, stack and store chairs in small spaces.

Phase 02

Ideation

Dozens of thumbnail sketches exploring a single pivot point, landing on the X-frame as the core idea.

Phase 03

Mock-ups

Rough cardboard and dowel prototypes to test fold angle, seat height and stability.

Phase 04

Refinement

Tuned proportions and joint details so the chair reads as one continuous line, open or closed.

Phase 05

Final

A finished chair that folds flat in one motion and stands as a confident sculptural object.
